Cut Copy Does Blade Runner

Over the last 48 hours I spent 19 and half of them on flight QF 6 from London to Australia next to a screaming baby, watching Black Adder and unintentionally listening in on introductory conversation from people lining up to use the toilet.

So after all that what better way to introduce TEA to Australia then to break the news that Dan from (Australia's) Cut Copy has spent the majority of 2009 re-creating the Blade Runner (1982) soundtrack.

Re-creating 1982 SCI FI classics seem to be the trend of late with Daft Punk scoring the new Tron Legacy by Joseph Kosinski. Tracks such as 'Tears in Rain' 'Rachel's Song' and 'OST' have all been recreated using a CS-80 synthesizer, yet we're are still a while off knowing if Dans recreation of Vangelis's masterpiece will see the light of day.

But what will see the light of day is album number 3 and some european festival dates.

Fri. July 16th - Lisbon, Portugal @ Super Bock Super RockSat.
July 17th - Valencia, Spain @ Benicassim Festival
Sun. July 18th - London, England @ Lovebox Festival
Thurs. July 29th - Emmaboda, Sweden @ Emmadoba Festival

Deadbeat

I first stumbled Deadbeat aka Scott Monteith (Canada) sifting through one of the many records stores in Berlin. Id previously been reading up on early 90's techno pioneers Monolake and found a remix 12" of Monolake classic Plumbicon. The 12" featured a Rebreather remix and a Deadbeat remix, the Deadbeat remix caught my ear and I subsequently purchased the record.

Funnily enough the next day at another record store I stumbled across another 12" of his. 'Teach The Devils Son' dark, moody and progressive. The 12" itself is slit between Deadbeat and fellow Berlin Dub Don Fenin. From there on their was no looking back on Deadbeats heavily dub laden minimal.

From 1999 to late 2003, Scott worked for the Montreal based company 'Applied Acoustics Systems', makers of a range of critically acclaimed software synthesizers, he also wrote for Computer Music Magazine which in turn lead to his musical expertise being called upon for the 2007 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne, Australia. Deadbeat has also performed at Sonar (Barcelona), Transmediale (Berlin) and Mutek (Montreal) music festivals.

Since producing full time as of 2000 you'll find that Deadbeat has quite the discography with four full lengths and a host of eps and remixes, find out more here

Be Sure to check out his Ghost Ships remix featuring Spaceape who recently collaborated with Martyn in 'Is This Insanity'.

New A.Mochi

After the success of Akihiro Mochis brooding 'Blackout' EP he opts for a louder style as opposed to the cluddy drummed Blackout. The highlight of 'Through the Never' Ep is the digital only bonus 'Whiteout', think a stripped down Blackout but just as big. TEA likes this.

As a producer Akihiro has released his music with the likes of Len Faki's Figure, Luke Slater's Mote-Evolver and Francois K's WaveTec.

In 2008 he signed two 12 inches for the 'Kumo' label as well as his successful first EP for Figure Records 'Battery'.

A.Mochi has also recently remixed Len Faki's 'Death By House' along with Adam Bayer & Ed Davenport.

From Berlin to Paris

Before relocating the TEA offices back to Australia I thought it would only be fair to take one last trip to my two favourite citys in Europe. Berlin & Paris.

First on the agenda, Records. And first stop Hardwax. Hardwax is located in Kreuzberg near Kottbusser Tor U-Bahn station. You'll find it on the 3rd floor of what looks to be sqaut from 90's Berlin. Graffiti laden walls, dank aromas and mysterious echos.

The first piece of graffiti I recognised was a texta scribbled ED BANGER stopping me to think...Does Vicarious Bliss still exist? I continued up the flights stairs to find a bolstered door with a small paper sign reading "open 12:00 - 20:00". I entered and thankfully it was Hardwax and not someones lounge room (or even worse). I spent the the next 2 hours sifting through records and eventually walked out with these.

Darkness was falling and I was in need of a disco nap if I was to survive the night ahead of me. This nap turned into a techno coma and I didnt leave my hostel until 1:30am.

First up was Watergate, in my opinion the best club in Berlin in terms of a freindly and knowledgable crowd. Yes its full of tourists (such as myself) but dont let the trendy trousers fool you as everyone is there to do one thing. Dance.

After waiting in the freezing line with a couple of drunk Scottish lads talking all things Innervisions, I entered the club at 3am just as Christian from Ame started, perfect. This followed 3 hours of nothing but LED lights and shoe shuffling. Next stop was Berlins techno mecca Berghain, or in my case Panoramabar as it was a friday night.

Getting my coat checked in the same time as Marcel Dettmann only added to the excitement off seeing him play a cultured 8-11am set. I managed to catch the last of Ra.h an Italian that kept things nice and thuddy with some smooth techno & dubstep cuts.

Next up was Marcel and by this stage time had lost itself. Dettmann made sure not to overstep the boundaries of Panoramabar techno with Berghain techno, keeping things more melodic then stripped back. Ben Klocks dub to Kerri Chandlers Pong being a highlight.

Amongst his set I found myself chatting all things MCDE with a bloke from Stuttgart, talking Robert Johnsons with a group from Frankfurters and reminiscing about Chris Leibing and Speedy J classics with a Berliner, all the while cheering any bass cut, beat drop or hook.

Succeeding Marcel into the late hours of the morning was Soundstream who felt happy enough to play track for track rather then set a mood, something which didn't sit too well with me but I was happy keep dancing and chatting the day away.

As the body began to tire I succumbed to the need for sleep and ventured out into a -6 degree snow white day. As if it wasn't already bright enough.

The only place in the world that could possibly make me say "im techno-ed out" did exactly that. Luckily the worlds friendiest DJ was playing at Luzia on the satuday night, a lovely bar located in Kreuzberg.

The man behind Balihu 'Daniel Wang' kept us dancing once again into the early hours of the morning, continually taking requests, chatting to anyone that would listen, as well as sharing dance floor with us over the last hour of his set. Earlier in the day i'd had a discussion about Madonna lucky star and to hear it played that night was hilarious!

Thanks Daniel for Quincy Jones Razzamatazz last track!

Next up was breakfast and one more quick record binge before i left for Paris to make sweet love and eat as much cheese, bread & wine as possible.

Here are 3 more records I purchased that morning.

Danke schön Berlin and see you soon.

Kuniyuki - Walking In The Naked City

Kuniyuki Takahashi is to release his 3rd full length Walking In The Naked City on Japan label Mule Musiq.

Since 2005 Kuniyuki has released several EPs, 2 LPs and a remix series for the label. Walking In The Naked City includes collaborations with jazz pianist Fumio Itabashi and well know jazz experimentalist Henrick Schwarz (Innervisions) adding some very rare vocals. The pair also worked together on 'The Session' with Yoshihro Tsukahara, released on Mule Musiq in 2008.

Kuniyuki's 'Dear African Sky' appeares on M.A.N.D.Y's Renaissance mix with Theo Parrish's Dubstrumental to 'All These Things' opening Endless Flights successful 'Im Starting To Feel Ok Vol 3' mix cd, mixed and complied by non other then dig and edits DJ KZA.

Kuniyuki's "Remixed 4' was his only release of 2009, hinting at having his head buried between pianos, saxaphones, strings and drum machines all last year.

With Japans magical approach to music we can be sure if previous releases such as 'Guitar Song' and 'Rain of Ocean' are anything to go by then we are in for something special. Over the years Kuniyuki has collborated and or been remixed by Theo Parrish, Henrik Schwarz, Mark E, Tony Lionni, Tokyo Black Star & Chateau Flight.

Not bad for the old CV ey?

You can hear some tracks from the album here.

Masculine, chizzled jaw lines, well groomed & German. A prerequisite for the techno DJ.

According to Fact Magazine, Berghains Marcel Dettmann, know for his ability to unite katabatic coldness with stonefaced 4x4s (Something fellow German STL also does well) is on the verge of releasing his debut album.

Clyde Drexler - Late Night Jam

Late Night Jam by ClydeDrexler

Fellow music cognomen Aaron Coultate & James Manning (aka Radeo Vidio) have decided to go their own separate ways after djing together for the past 4 years.

Together the two played in and around Australia, then deciding to move to the UK, from there they played and hosted several London parties whilst playing across the UK with a host of talents.

James Manning aka Clyde Drexler has now relocated back to Melbourne, Australia with a record collection spanning genres, eras and continents: from Berlin ‘95 to New York ‘79; Chicago ‘84, obscure gems & current day jams. This avid techno collector has proved to dig deeper and longer than your average, dime-a-dozen DJ, combining decadence with dirtiness, and a fair amount in between.

This is his first mix under the Clyde Drexler moniker since Radeo Vidio took up hiatus this January. A techno mix in every sense of the word, from its terrifying Cio Do'r/Surma intro, Berghain-esque industrialism of Ben Klock & Marcel Dettmann, to the thought provoking landscapes of STL's checkmate to Clarks gnarling set finisher 'Growls Garden' this mix has it all.

A definite late night jam.

TEA "thumbs up" likes this.

Four Tet remixes

Back in 2006 Domino Recording Company released a 2 disc Four Tet remix package. What better way to celebrate the release of Kieran "Four Tet" Hebden's first LP in four years 'There Is Love In You' then sneaking this into your record bag as a cheeky add on purchase. For the uninitiated Four Tet's Disc 1 hold remixes to Radiohead, Madvillian, Aphex Twin, Bloc Party, Beth Orton and Sia. All fall victim to Four Tet's glitchy percussion and sketched electronica.

A very hip hop orientated Disc 2 holds remixes by artists Boom Bip, close friend Manitoba now know as Caribou, Warp Records Battles and lyrical associates Percee P & Jay Dee. For the art enthusiasts the CD's booklet contains kaleidiscoped images shot by Jason Evans through miniature Swarovski crystal figurines as seen on the cover.

Very rarely do remix packages contain no dead wood, this is one of them.

azuni music

Gianni Siravo & Sven Lacoste make up Switzerlands azuni. Together the two merge warm synths alongside verberating keys with classic house precussion and vocals to boot. Tracks like 'azuni night shifter' 'blue sky' and 'can't forget' will give any dancefloor the hands up attitude.

azuni's latest offering 'Here You Come' on Switzerland imprint Drumpoet Community gives us just that. Deep euro house at its best.

Hands Up!

You'll find it available for download here
