TEA Podcast #3 - Aaron Coultate

Juno Plus scribe and big cheese Aaron Coultate is the latest to dunk his techno bags into TEA's podcast series. When he's not dining with Dixon or clinking Carlsberg's with Levon Vincent you can find him selecting songs for the many roving parties of London and beyond.

The Juno Plus Colonel caught up with TEA to talk about stripping it back, Cut Copy's fabric mix and tea with no milk.

Tell us about about your podcast, how did you go about compiling and mixing it?
My main focus was to have some fun with the things I love most about techno – the mystery, the austerity, the moodiness. I tried to choose tracks with the stripped back-yet-danceable feel that all good techno has.

Your the main man at Juno Plus and its fast approaching its first birthday, how has the first year been?
Yeah it’s been amazing. I’m really excited by what the future holds. We’ve got loads of stuff coming up, kicking off a Firecracker Records showcase/Juno Plus 1st birthday party in September. The only conceivable down side has been my unhealthy new obsession with Google Analytics…

Juno Plus has spoken to some big and interesting names since its inception last year, who have you found most interesting to talk too?
Wow, hard to say… Levon Vincent is a true gent and I found him quite inspiring to speak to. DJ Harvey was a pleasure too, and of course Andrew Weatherall, who was the first person I interviewed for the site.

What did you enjoy listening to growing up and what tilted you towards electronic music?
Well my parents introduced me to some great stuff, from Credence to the Beatles and Bowie, plus loads of Australian bands from the 80s and 90s. Electronic music wise, the Cut Copy fabric mix was one of the things that inspired me to start DJing. But to be honest it wasn’t until I started exploring the electronic music mainstays – house, disco and techno – that I found my niche.

What artists are you feeling at the moment?
The aforementioned Mr Vincent (and the whole Underground Quality lot), Jacques Renault, Floating Points, Appleblim, King Midas Sound, the list goes on. Label wise, the Rush Hour reissues have been loads of fun, everything Sandwell District touch turns to techno gold and full props to Honest Jon’s for releasing everything from 180bpm South African electro to the latest Actress LP.

Where are you playing next?
I’ll be supporting Actress at the Oscillate Wildly 1st birthday bash on July 29, then it’s Shameless Disco at the Horse & Groom with Ethyl & Flori on August 6.

Finally whats your favourite tea?
It’s all about the Jasmine tea…it’s refreshing, there’s a nice aroma and you don’t have to buy milk. Perfect.

London - 333 - Shameless Disco 15/05/10

East London's Shameless Disco will be hosting cowbell kings In Flagranti for its May instalment of Shameless Disco, which is shaping up to be their biggest soiree yet. The Swiss duo have been wooing dance floors with their sleazy disco workouts for years now and Shameless Disco is delighted in welcoming Sasha down to spin some records.

Next up on the bill is Chamboche, ala Nottingham’s Sam Williams of Feverish and Ipso Facto fame made his Shameless debut earlier this year, resulting in much jimming and jamming on the 333 dancefloor.

In attendance as always will be the ever reliable supporting cast of Aaron Coultate, Charlie Boy, Rubicon and James Hayward, who all bring their unique take on the disco and house genres to the decks.

London - Russian Bar - WEPLAYMUSIC 6/05/10

Last months WEPLAYMUSIC saw thier biggest party yet with a rammed Russian Bar and absolutely massive set from Max Cooper with his unique blend of glitchy, emotive, and driving techno. This month they're back to their regular school night, but who needs sleep when you can get classic italo, deep & tech house, minimal and techno till the early hours of Friday morning.

This month sees:

CHARLIE BOY (Shameless Disco) founder of roving Shoreditch club night Shameless Disco who's guests have included Linkwood, Matt Walsh, Chamboche, Inflagranti and Matt Waites knows how to throw a party. This will be no different with his selection pulsing disco and shameless grooves.

AARON COULTATE (Shameless Disco/ Juno) When he's not writing about music for Juno Plus music he's playing it. A DJ of phenomenal taste and journalistic integrity whose track selection harbours the ability to ebb and flow between moody house, broken beat and catchy disco whilst keeping to a structured set. Aaron provided us with some very tasty deep house cuts with March's WEPLAYMUSIC 003 with fellow beard stroker James Manning aka Clyde Drexler under the Radeo Vidio Monkier

London - Russian Bar - 04/03/10

In Russia if you're invited for a meal, expect the hosts to feed you so much Ukha, Pelmeni and Pirozhki that you'll turn Boris Yeltsin. If your you're on a diet i'd suggest emulating satiety, otherwise you will end up мертвый.

Same goes for all things music at the Russian Bar first Thursday of every month. Expect Juno Plus head honcho Aaron Coultate and the Thick as Thieves boys to have you rubbing your rounded belly and ears with content.

Aaron 'Cosmonaut' Coultate will be playing his first gig under his own name since splitting from life long (non sexual) partner James Manning, formally Radeo Vidio. Aaron is a DJ of phenomenal taste who's track selection harbours the ability to ebb and flow between moody house, broken beat and catchy disco whilst keeping to a structured set. You can see the 'Colonels' favourites for February here.

So far Danny "Arshaven' Bartha and James 'Trotsky' Hamilton aka Thick as Thieves have supported the likes of Basement Jaxx, Daniel Steinberg, Nat Self (Zombie Disco Squad) and Solo whilst honing their own tech house production skill(z) with cheeky horns and clicks that Jesse Rose would be proud of.

The two later in the year will be playing London's Stag & Dagger festival, White Nights (Berlin) and lending support to Thomas Schumacher at T/Bar and TEA favourite Ethyl at Shoreditch's Legion. The two recently did a mix for WEPLAYMUSIC which you can find here

As usual the night is free and it kicks off at 10pm.

Clyde Drexler - Late Night Jam

Late Night Jam by ClydeDrexler

Fellow music cognomen Aaron Coultate & James Manning (aka Radeo Vidio) have decided to go their own separate ways after djing together for the past 4 years.

Together the two played in and around Australia, then deciding to move to the UK, from there they played and hosted several London parties whilst playing across the UK with a host of talents.

James Manning aka Clyde Drexler has now relocated back to Melbourne, Australia with a record collection spanning genres, eras and continents: from Berlin ‘95 to New York ‘79; Chicago ‘84, obscure gems & current day jams. This avid techno collector has proved to dig deeper and longer than your average, dime-a-dozen DJ, combining decadence with dirtiness, and a fair amount in between.

This is his first mix under the Clyde Drexler moniker since Radeo Vidio took up hiatus this January. A techno mix in every sense of the word, from its terrifying Cio Do'r/Surma intro, Berghain-esque industrialism of Ben Klock & Marcel Dettmann, to the thought provoking landscapes of STL's checkmate to Clarks gnarling set finisher 'Growls Garden' this mix has it all.

A definite late night jam.
