TEA Cosy Sounds Part II

TEA has been a little quite on the party front this year, with only two events thrown consisting of the same line up. Our first show in January celebrated two years of blogger-sphere life with the ever reliable warm up maestro Daniel Filipovic and Nic Tuohey, affectionally known as the “Dark Horse” thanks to his red-blooded closer at My Aeon.

Testosterone levels dropped for our Cosy Sounds instalment at Loop a few weeks later, once again with the velvety Filipovic and Nic Tuohey, who has since left for five months of hedonism, falafels and cheap rent in Berlin. Check out his recent interview with Roman Lindau for TEA below.

We break a five month TEA party drought at Loop Friday, August 17 with Cosy Sounds Part II. Cemented to the bill as always is Daniel “Swayze” Filipovic and James Manning, with the introduction of Phaon Phipat - Melbourne’s diamond in the rough.

I was fortunate enough to meet Phipat at a recent Levon Vincent gig here in Melbourne and hearing his vinyl only Space Odyssey 900 mix was like drinking a refreshing brew of peppermint tea.

By the sounds of Phaon Phipat’s mixes (his most recent 001 mix above), the young Melbournian’s taste in deep house rivals that of the lab coat German producers making it and we look forward to having him warm Loop for the first time.

TEA Gets Cosy at Loop

TEA’s second birthday saw My Aeon elevated by sets from Daniel Filipovic and Nic Tuohey, as well as the nights celebrant James Manning. TEA announces its second party for the year and our first evening at Loop for 2012 with our Cosy Sounds instalment on March 23rd.

TEA has invited back our two most trusted DJs in the honourable Daniel Filipovic and Nic Tuohey. Alongside James Manning the three will nestle in for a night focused on sounding the deeper strands house music and dub laden riddums.

TEA 2nd Birthday My Aeon Feb 11th

TEA is now 2 years young and to celebrate 24 months of internet rambling and obsessive blogging comes a 3 hour set from TEA Commander in Chief James Manning. TEA began as blog focused on sharing what we believe to be good music written in a professional manner. So far TEA has interviewed close to 40 acts including luminaries such as Surgeon, Marcel Dettmann, Norman Nodge, Adam X, Dan Curtin, Redshape, Terrence Fixmer, Xhin, Lucy and Perc as well as up and coming artist Tom Dicicco, AnD, Markus Suckut, Milton Bradley, James Kumo and Ed Davenport. TEA also runs a successful podcast series which has so far seen podcasts from HMC, Rødhad, AnD, Zadig, Subjected, Tom Dicicco, Adam Rivet and Northern Structures. TEA is responsible for Xhin and Lucy's inaugural Australian tours and has hosted other parties with Robert Hood, Marcel Dettmann, Jay Shepheard as well as booking local acts The Carter Bros, Tornado Wallace, Mic Newman and Francis Inferno Orchestra to play at various venues around Australia. TEA's 2nd Birthday warm up duties are of course entrusted in TEA's warm up specialist Daniel Filipovic, who's formidable ability to woo an entering crowd with his dub laden precision is of absolute perfection. James Manning will have the floor from 12 where instead about writing about TEA's favourite releases he will be playing them, expect anything from beatless avant garde records to pummelling mid nineties Downwards releases to hands up house. TEA also introduces the worldly Nic Tuohey, who's encyclopaedic knowledge and taste making qualities come courtesy of stints living in London and Berlin and Los Angeles. TEA would like to thank all who have supported us in the past and we look forward to a forward thinking and expressive night of detached music.

TEA & MACHINE Present Lucy

Friday the 16th of September TEA and MACHINE proudly present Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Lucy for the third appearance of his Australian tour.

Lucy's will be hitting Australian shores direct from a Klubnacht at Berlin's techno high command Berghain with Ostgut Ton stalwarts Shed, Marcel Dettmann and Boris.

TEA presents The Tortiose

TEA is back for a winter instalment of warmth courtesy of sloe moe deep house and disco dabbler Torquhil Anderson aka The Tortoise.

Anderson first made a splash in 2010 with his track Bumpin on new Ducth imprint Siena, but it was his Gonna Be release on Under The Shade sub label 3rd Strike Recordings that first drew attention to the housey halfshell.

March this year saw his track The Tortoise Goes To The Orchestra on a various artists release for James Flavour and Break 3000's Dirt Crew Recordings imprint, a label responsible for housing some EP's by one of TEA's previous interviewee and song selector Mic Newman.

Slow and steady support will be seen from tea-man James Manning and capitol hill's Rubicon at Loop July 22nd.

TEA rolled into Cuckoo Bar for its first Adelaide party of 2011 with usual suspects The Carter Brothers and James Manning in tow. Melbourne's deep house don Mic Newman was on the blower dialling in some delictable house cuts to an already spritely dance floor, ready to add another coat of red to Cuckoo Bar's deeply rubicund walls. Mic Newman and the Adelaide faithful didn't disappoint as Cuckoo was filled with a sense of unity, hedonism and abandonment that will no doubt be talked about for weeks to come.

The first hour of the night belonged to Cuckoo Music controller Phil Rogers aka Phildo with some urbane house selections to set the tone. TEA residents Tim and Gavin Carter aka the loveable Carter Brothers brought their full disco jacket to Cuckoo's main room with an array of secret weapons. Rush Hour's debuting duo kept things pure as the driven snow, wooing heads from the bar and onto the dance floor. Tim Carter edged towards some deeper sounds with the occasional stepped style while Carter #2 Gavin indulged in some Detroit sentiment adding drive and momentum with plenty of that trademark Carter Brother sound fuelling many of Cuckoo's parties.

Mic Newman, 726 Kilometers from his (03) dialling code of Victoria, rung up some previously unheard Micky Nu jams which pulsated through Cuckoo's (08) Funktion 1's. By this stage the party was in full swing sizzling to Sally and prepared to die young all in the name of a good fun. A creative and prolific producer, Newman played two hours of deep and at the same time uplifting house but it was in the how he did so that made the night so special.

As the drinks flowed and good times rolled Cuckoo found itself kicking on with an atmosphere far from dwindling. James Manning finished the party with some cheeky techno cuts mixed in and out of some house and disco jams before waving Gavin Carter over for a final encore mix. Mic Newman's Adelaide soirée saw a scene of sweaty and jovial peeps enjoying the light side of the evenings dark, leaving an anticipation for TEA's next Adelaide party.

TEA's fourth party of 2011 and first party at our spiritual home Cuckoo Bar takes place May 7th. TEA will be dunking Melbourne's Fantastic Man Mic Newman in to a warm Cuckoo for a night of clicks, cuts and grooves.

Mic Newman is another member of Melbourne’s increasingly impressive and influential deep house mafia. He’s already a well known name for tech house heads, with releases on Dirt Crew and 8bit among others. A couple of solid 12″s on Tsuba in 2010 continued his shift to the deeper end of the spectrum and has given him a new set of admirers, most notably Runaway with their remix of “Live East” from his Live East Die Young EP from 2020 Vision's new sub label FINA.

TEA will be supported on the night by our favourite double act the Carter Bros and TEA's resident James Manning.

TEA presents JUG - Loop Bar 8/4/11

TEA announces its second soiree at Melbourne's quintessential house and techno institution Loop Bar. TEA's special guest is British expat come Sydney sider JUG.

Best know for his work on London's autoreply, JUG also boasts collaborations with Mark Henning and Ben Rourke as well as other beats and pieces with Bart Skils, Anton Pieete and Fog.

No stranger to a TEA party, JUG saw three call ups last year which included warm up sets for Berlin's Marcel Dettmann and Retrofit's Jay Shepheard. JUG will be providing a selection of prime house and techno cuts from his 15 crate plus vinyl collection, a special night for the vinyl obsessive and techno purist.

In support of JUG will be Pinksilver stalwart Daniel Filipovic and TEA's resident James Manning.

Jay Shepheard & JUG at The Croft Institute 27/11/10

Jay Shepheard and JUG played host to TEA’s first Melbourne party at The Croft Institute with straddling support from resident Clyde Drexler as well as Martin L and Sammy Soda keepin things homely in room 2. A night where everyone was was up for a party, except for mother nature or course.

Melbourne’s whether decided to put on what might have well been the bleakest day of the year. John arrived to Melbourne from a 31 and sunny Sydney to a thick blanket of grey and rain. Safe to say this didn’t make John homesick as he was looking as bronzed as Bondi rescue thanks to what would have been a week full of sun drenched laziness.

After a healthy assortment of Chinese Dumplings and Broccoli in Melbourne’s Chinatown we made our way to Croft where TEA resident Clyde Drexler was kickin things off to a warm groove, quite the contrast to outside.

JUG then had the syringe and test tube swilling Croft move from the grass growing bar to the gymnasium dancefloor in which Croft was beading with Jay Shepheard excitement. Jay's at first cautious dancefloor had within no time lost all inhibitions as Croft’s hips were heaving and hands were flailing.

Croft’s security instantly became the bad guy as TEA and Jay were given a less then heartfelt ‘last track’ ultimatum. The lights were then raised and a scattered round of applause was appreciated form Croft. Next up was a cab back to TEA’s place for an afterparty....easy right?

Jay Shepheard & Tornado Wallace 20/11/10

School's out and the sun was shining last Saturday the 20th of Nov. Landans Jay Shepheard & Melbournagain's Tornado Wallace help herd an excited Cuckoo Bar through a whirlwind of disco and house driven jams.

TEA's special Canberrian guest Rubicon kicked the night off with a solid 2 and half hours of adulterated and slo mo warmth, setting the tone to what was going to be a night full of mischief and tom foolery.

Mr Wallace sporting a moustache to match the music had the young faithful and bar hangers on slowly making tracks to the dance floor thanks to some eloquent pre party jams. It wasn't until Cuckoo's transition from heave to ho did Lewie decide to drop what everyone had been waiting for. With the twirl of the index finger and smooth lean back everybody's TW favourite Paddlin was slammed back in to a response of overwrought squeals and giggles.

137 Hindley street was then treated to some Jay Shepheard live. After some early technical hicups Jay had TEA's wooping boys and yelping girls dancing to the beat of the Jay drum on Cuckoo's impressive Funktion 1 soundsystem. Jay opted for rhythmic drum patterns and cleansed bleeps, an enjoyable contrast to the chugging fours and crackling textures of Tornado Wallace.

With the night cruising along rather swimmingly and in it's final quarter, TEA resident Clyde Drexler brought the night home locking away a few final fist pumps for the Cuckoo faithful wanting more.

When the house lights did eventually come on it was evident that a wholesome night was had...and who can't resist belting out some Talking Heads anyway.

TEA Presents ROBERT HOOD

TEA proudly presents Detroit techno legend Robert Hood for its inaugural TEA Party!

Robert Hood will be playing an intimate Adelaide set at Hindley Streets Cuckoo Bar on Thursday July 1 along side HMC, The Carter Bros [Live] and Clyde Drexler.

Sir Hood will be making his way from Sonar festival in Barcelona where he just launched his much anticipated Omega Man LP.
