Earl Grey: Tomas Rubeck

From a well established artist, to fledging new producer, Tomas Rubeck provides the second instalment to our new Earl Grey podcast.

When it comes to dub techno that's not produced or released by the usual suspects, the discerning ear naturally becomes all the more discerning. The masses of dub techno, modern dub techno let's call it, being released at the moment, often from continental Europe, can all to quickly wash into the single known template of filtered kicks, chords, delay and reverb. Because of this, upcoming producers to break away from the worn mould such as Tomas Rubeck stand out like a lighthouse for the lost, as this year's Inster EP demonstrated.

Tomas Rubeck belongs to a clutch of producers doing inventive things for the deeper strands of dubby techno; Federsen, Roger Gerressen and the ESHU collective, to Soren Jahan's René Audiard alias among his contemporaries. So far in 2013 Rubeck has released the one aforementioned solo EP, featuring the excellent "Inster 2" and remix from Mattias Fridell who continues to impress with every remix he does, proving to become somewhat of a remix specialist.

Based out of Derby, east Midlands area of the UK, Rubeck could be considered somewhat of an anchorite for the sound he delivers. Following digital EPs for Landed Productions, his vinyl debut came through the Maltese cuisine inspired Lampuka Records in 2011. Since then he's further developed his sound, earning a call up from the established Telrae imprint earlier this year, reworking a track from the debut EP by new name Andrea Cichecki, while most recently Rubeck's "Factions" appeared alongside productions by Fridell, Myles Sergé and established Japanese artist Imugem Orihasam on a various artist sampler by ESHU.

It's with great pleasure that we invite Tomas Rubeck to curate the second edition of our Earl Grey series, in a mix that weaves its way through subby electro from Conforce to the shaman inspired rhythmics of Dino Sabatini and Donato Dozzy.

Earl Grey: Architectural

Welcome to the Earl Grey podcast, a new series of mixes devoted to the various forms and styles of dub techno, ambient and experimental music.



Inaugurating the Earl Grey podcast is Architectural, the dub techno inspired alias of Juan Rico, better known as Spanish producer Reeko. The Architectural project was launched in 2010 on its label of the same name, releasing a total of four EPs by the end of 2011 before providing the digital label Paradigma Musik with the Dreams EP, featured in this mix for TEA.

Juan Rico's Architectural guise soon caught the attention of fellow Spaniard Sverca which later resulted in the release of Peacetime, a two track EP, of which the A-side, "Looking Ahead", was licensed for Norman Nodge's Berghain 06 mix.

Later this month Oscar Mulero's Pole Group label, whom Reeko is a regular contributor, will release the debut LP from Architectural entitled The Blue Album. Architectural's take on dub techno is designed for the dancefloor more than the genre's stereotypically perceived construct of shady textures and sparse low-end beats. This is emphasised throughout Architectural's forthcoming LP with bigger, dub-infused tracks like "Melted" and "Dualities", while "Sex On Kleper - 22B" and "The Universal Dream" provide some melodic and ambient excursions through sound. Rico doesn't fall too far down the ambient rabbit hole so to speak, by also providing some club geared and functional productions such as "Force Carriers" and "Startling Idea".

The Blue Album will be Reeko's third full length following 2011's Finding The New Matter, released through his own Mental Disorder imprint, while back in 2004 Reeko provided Submitted To Involuntary Treatment for Surface Records sub-label, Inceptive. The sub-label was set up by Surface co-founders, Richard Polson and Nick Dunton, as a place to groom and showcase up-and-coming talent, with the two proving to be tastemakers by including Reeko twice in its three year existence after the label was launched by the then-fledging techno producer Ø [Phase].

Juan Rico turns in a dub-sided podcast for TEA, laced with new, older and unreleased Architectural material that's weaved between a flurry of Ostgut Ton productions and other music from Quantec, Plastikman (via Carl Craig) and a houseir selection from the hatched industrial and noise act Ryo Murakami.

Winter Listening

For we southern hemispherians winter is upon us and when most cuss the cold, four letter word the rain or abhor the grey, take in for one second we are amidst culminating listening weather.

What could be more enjoyable then listening to some Rod Moddell whilst hedging imaginary bets on rain drops racing to the window seal, or having your solo night time voyage home sound tracked by

Vladislav Delay.

Grey is a neutral colour and energy which imparts void, emptiness, lack of movement, emotion and warmth. So next time you find yourself cold and miserable fill the void with a soundtrack that wouldn't quite sound the same in summer, perhaps some Kit Klayton?

Needless to say a cup of Earl Grey and some Para will also do the trick.
