TEA with Xhin

Singapore producer Xhin is slowly etching his name into concrete tablets with his dub and big room styles. Championed by the likes of Speedy J, Jerome Sydenham, Luke Slater and Function, Xhin's darkly brooding yet intellectual soundscapes have fast tracked the Singaporean as a name to watch and sound to heed.

TEA caught up with Xhin to talk experimental folk music, DJ Tools and mint tea.

Tell us a bit about the electronic music scene in Singapore

A Growing One. I hope.

Any local Singapore Talent we should be aware of?

Yeah, their is a folkish experimental band called "The Observatory" who are quite interesting and definitely worth checking out.

You have a very big sound flirting with various styles of techno, what did you grow up listening to and what eventually led you to this kind of music?

I grew up listening to Yellow Magic Orchestra, Kraftwerk, rock, heavy metal, jazz, motown... Only back in 1997 was Detroit Techno introduced to me by a good pal. I then picked up DJ'ing and started to learn more about producing IDM and techno music step by step.

Your Electric Deluxe podcast is a favourite of mine this year, you've gone against making a typical techno mix, how did you go about compiling and mixing the podcast?

I was told by Andre & Jochem (Speedy J) that their guests are encouraged to play stuff that they were influenced by or whatever was on their music players. So I thought it was a good opportunity for me to showcase a tailor-made mix of all my all time favourites as well as showing what I was and still am influenced by.

Some of your releases feature DJ Tools, do you use DJ Tools in your sets or is this just a bonus addition for DJs?

Yeah I'm always using tools in my sets and I think it's a good thing to release my music as a tool or as parts taken out of the original. This means DJs can have more choices to choose what to play or be creative in making their own sets unique.

What are you currently working on?

I'm currently working on some new material and it's too early to reveal any info just yet. So do check my myspace, facebook or twitter for more updates soon.

What artists are you feeling at the moment?

None in particular at the moment, their is so much music out there that any music that is good and quality, I'm feeling it.

Your playing Berghain and a Warehouse party in Tokyo later this year which you must be looking forward too, whats your prepartion for shows like these?

I will be trying out my new tracks, new promos and some new sounds made for my hybrid DJ/live sets.

Where have you enjoyed playing most?

I enjoyed playing in Germany. Especially in Berlin.

Finally what is your favourite tea?

I'm actually a coffee lover but if I have to choose my favourite tea would be mint.

Be sure to checkout the new EP from Xhin Monad III on Stroboscopic Artefacts

TEA Podcast #3 - Aaron Coultate

Juno Plus scribe and big cheese Aaron Coultate is the latest to dunk his techno bags into TEA's podcast series. When he's not dining with Dixon or clinking Carlsberg's with Levon Vincent you can find him selecting songs for the many roving parties of London and beyond.

The Juno Plus Colonel caught up with TEA to talk about stripping it back, Cut Copy's fabric mix and tea with no milk.

Tell us about about your podcast, how did you go about compiling and mixing it?
My main focus was to have some fun with the things I love most about techno – the mystery, the austerity, the moodiness. I tried to choose tracks with the stripped back-yet-danceable feel that all good techno has.

Your the main man at Juno Plus and its fast approaching its first birthday, how has the first year been?
Yeah it’s been amazing. I’m really excited by what the future holds. We’ve got loads of stuff coming up, kicking off a Firecracker Records showcase/Juno Plus 1st birthday party in September. The only conceivable down side has been my unhealthy new obsession with Google Analytics…

Juno Plus has spoken to some big and interesting names since its inception last year, who have you found most interesting to talk too?
Wow, hard to say… Levon Vincent is a true gent and I found him quite inspiring to speak to. DJ Harvey was a pleasure too, and of course Andrew Weatherall, who was the first person I interviewed for the site.

What did you enjoy listening to growing up and what tilted you towards electronic music?
Well my parents introduced me to some great stuff, from Credence to the Beatles and Bowie, plus loads of Australian bands from the 80s and 90s. Electronic music wise, the Cut Copy fabric mix was one of the things that inspired me to start DJing. But to be honest it wasn’t until I started exploring the electronic music mainstays – house, disco and techno – that I found my niche.

What artists are you feeling at the moment?
The aforementioned Mr Vincent (and the whole Underground Quality lot), Jacques Renault, Floating Points, Appleblim, King Midas Sound, the list goes on. Label wise, the Rush Hour reissues have been loads of fun, everything Sandwell District touch turns to techno gold and full props to Honest Jon’s for releasing everything from 180bpm South African electro to the latest Actress LP.

Where are you playing next?
I’ll be supporting Actress at the Oscillate Wildly 1st birthday bash on July 29, then it’s Shameless Disco at the Horse & Groom with Ethyl & Flori on August 6.

Finally whats your favourite tea?
It’s all about the Jasmine tea…it’s refreshing, there’s a nice aroma and you don’t have to buy milk. Perfect.

TEA - Robert Hood - Cuckoo - 01/07/10

TEA threw its first party at Adelaide's techno savvy Cuckoo Bar hosted by none other then Detroit techno legend Robert Hood with straddling support from Adelaide's HMC, The Carter Bros and Clyde Drexler.

The Detroit sound is and has always been big in the south and Cuckoo bar with its Funktion One was tingling with excitement at the chance to see one of techno's finest. Clyde Drexler kicked the night off and kept things deep and foot tapping until Adelaide's renowned HMC took over with a warm up set played from the heart and the head receiving woops and yiews from Cuckoo's adoring connoisseurs and first timers alike.

Pic Derek Lang
The Omega man was last in Adelaide 18 years ago and with Cuckoo buzzing from HMC's perfectly timed drops of Carl Craig, Mr Bojangles and Chuck Roberts "In the beginning there was jack!" cometh Robert Hood. Hood opened with Alpha "The Beginning" before getting the party started in true Hood fashion with machined 4 by 4's and those hats that we all love.

A predominately vinyl set saw Hoods vintage Detroit jams sequenced between snippets from his new album 'Omega' with Alpha and Omega getting the most from Cuckoos F1 soundsystem. Hood played to a packed house until 3:30am on a Thursday with the Adelaide faithful proving they know and love their techno.

The Carter Bros finished up for Cuckoo's school night revelers keeping the vibe strong until 5am, sealing off a party that will no doubt be talked about for another 18 years to come.
